Network Monitoring
The term network monitoring describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms.

nefu
nefu - A network monitoring daemon.
nefu monitors network services and reports outages. Working from a
discription of the network topography, nefu's algorithm prevents "false
alarms" in the event of a network outage due to a dependency failure.

nefu has been successfully compiled and tested on the following platforms:

- Debian
nefu is in production use at the University of Michigan, monitoring
more than 250 servers (among which are U-M's IMAP, WWW, and LDAP
Directory servers) and a variety of other systems. nefu is available
under a BSD-style license.
